Drawing on the Investment
Caregiving through memory loss

Opening paragraph
I received an email recently from one of our constituents who was reflecting on the experience of caring for a spouse who is gradually losing memory and becoming more dependent on others. I obtained permission to share these thoughtful words as an encouragement to others who find themselves absorbed in the ministry of caring for a loved one who is acquiring disabilities:

"Caregiving taxes every physical and emotional energy I have on certain days.  When memory problems challenge daily functions, confusion blocks or frustrates communication, or physical limitations keep us from activities we have formerly enjoyed, I have to reach deeper than what I have used in the last 60 years of our relationship.

"Those 60 years have been an investment like one invests in a savings account, and now, when needed, I simply draw on what we have invested in throughout the many ups and downs.  After those years of thinking of us as "we", I am aware that there are times when "I" separates in order to cope.  But "we" still drives my caregiving and keeps me able, with God's help, to deal with life each day.

"This, with the help and prayers of others, continues to help us live and love life and each other."
