Learning Disabilities
Learning Disabilities can show up in any educational setting.  Christian education is no exception.  Parents and Sunday School teachers should watch for these signs of possible learning disabilities.

Children with Learning Disabilities
  • may struggle with reading
  • may not interact in a way that is deemed appropriate by their teachers & peers
  • may struggle to pay attention in class
  • may struggle to organize themselves, their class work and their time.
  • may go to great lengths to avoid activities that they do not enjoy, such as writing or reading.
  • may be easily frustrated.
  • may have difficulty finishing work on time.
  • may have trouble copying notes from a chalkboard, overhead screen, etc.
  • may find it difficult to sequence events, times, or things.
The sooner you get help the better!

A poll in 2000 which measured parental understanding of learning disabilities found that 44% of parents waited over a year after noticing their children struggling, before getting help.  While the presence of one of the above noted characteristics does not definitively mean an individual has a learning disability, these signs in your child may prompt you to do some research to learn more.

Below are some handy resources especially for persons in the church who work with persons in Christian education settings.  See also the LD Information page with websites, books, videos, and more that have served as useful resources for parents and individuals with learning disabilities:

Learning Disabilities Resources

A workshop handout outlining seven common myths about learning disabilities and what the true facts are.

Learning Disabilities Statistics
Statistics indicating the extent of the issue in our society.

Case Studies on Learning Disabilities
Three case studies are presented, each on a separate page and followed by specific study questions.  Each one creates the opportunity for small groups to gain more awareness and develop solutions for common situations that come up in churches regarding learning disabilities.
