Retreats and Camps

Camps and retreats that accommodate disabilities offer  welcome, enjoyment and spiritual renewal to individuals with disabilities and their families. Here you will find programs sponsored by Anabaptist-related groups or held at Mennonite Camping Association facilities. Weekend retreats and week-long events accommodate individuals with diverse disabilities. A mental health retreat brings together people who live with mental illness for fellowship and support.

Project Promise Retreat

Project Promise Retreat, September 11-13, is sponsored by MDC Goldenrod for persons with developmental disabilities.  It is also open to families and caregivers.  Activities include a talent show, hot dog roast, crafts, and worship services. Registration is very reasonable and includes meals.  The retreat is held at the Brethren Retreat Center near Shipshewana IN.  Email  or phone (574) 533-9720 ext. 7.  


JOY Retreat

Mental Health Spiritual Retreat
September 5-6, 2010
Camp Mennoscah
Murdock, Kansas

Mental Health Retreat at Camp Mennoscah is for persons affected by mental illness and their family and friends. Come to support each other, have fun, and enjoy fellowship, music, and worship. Scholarships are available. Transportation from Newton, KS, may be available. Email or phone (620) 297-3290.

This annual retreat was first organized in 1995 by Arlene Friesen Schmidt who was then a member of Shalom Mennonite Church. Originally it was called "Shalom Mental Health Spiritual Retreat." Later Western District Life Enrichment Committee assumed planning responsibilities. Three different camp sites have hosted the event, including Camp Mennoscah in recent years. This year it will have four sponsors:  the Western District Retreat Commission, Prairie View Community Mental Health Services, First Mennonite Church in Halstead, and Shalom Mennonite Church in Newton.

Special Week has been a highlight of the summer camp season at Black Rock Retreat for over twenty-five years. Black Rock’s own counselors and volunteers serve as staff for adults with intellectual and physical disabilities.

Activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, wilderness class, drama, recreation class, archery, and nature class combine with an emphasis on the Word of God for an incredible week of fun. Email or phone (800) 858-9299.


Shalom Retreat

An exciting week full of activities, laughter, and friendships for adults with developmental disabilities. The speaker this year will be Ulli Klemm. Camp Hebron is a year round Christian Camp and retreat center located on the side of Peters Mountain in Powell's valley, just 20 miles north of Harrisburg, PA.

Retreat for Families, Friends and Persons with Disabilities
July 21-25, 2010

Scottdale, Pennsylvania

Laurelville Retreat for Families, Friends and Persons with Disabilities provides a week full of laughter, games and honest sharing about the joys and struggles that accompany persons with disabilities and their families. Throughout the week campers will enjoy games, singing, crafts and devotional times led by trained and dedicated counselors.

Input times for adults provide rich information and a safe space for family members to share openly. In addition to camper activities and adult sessions, the schedule includes  inclusive worship, free afternoons with respite care, and entertaining evening campfires and themed dances.

Joy for the Journey
August 13-15, 2010
Spruce Lake Retreat
Canadensis, Pennsylvania

Joy for the Journey Retreat offers spiritual encouragement and nourishment in a weekend with others who understand the challenges and joys of dealing with intellectual disability in the family. During each session for caregivers, programmed activities are planned for children of all ages and abilities. Bring everyone in the family for a breath of fresh air on the mountain.A group of 20 or so smiling children and adults is waiving hands and walking together across a grassy lawn. The 2009 Joy for the Journey program includes a concert by Christian musician John G. Elliott, and input from Paul Miller. A leader with many talents, Miller has served as teacher, principal, missions director, speaker and writer. He and his wife Jill have six children, one of whom has a disability.

Campers with intellectual disabilities ages 16 through adult are able to experience the joys of camp in a safe environment that accommodates their needs.  Campers will participate in arts and crafts, nature, campfires, singing, swimming, and Bible times. Due to rugged terrain, the camp is unable to accommodate individuals who use a wheelchair or walker.
